Luke Edward Hall X Svenskt Tenn

Svenskt Tenn EXHIBITED Luke Edward hall x Svenskt Tenn 17.05.2019 – 12.08.2019

"The world can be very grey and grim, so it makes sense to me to embrace bold colour. I have always loved surrounding myself with colour – living with it, wearing it, making things with it. I suppose it’s about optimism; I find colour to be very happy-making."

Colourful objects created by a colourful person. That is the way to describe the London-based artist Luke Edward Hall's entire essence and body of work. The 29-year-old designer has – despite his young age – already taken the design world by storm with his anti-minimalist, characteristic aesthetics. Unique faces, bold colours and popping prints are frequent elements in Luke's designs, and the collection he has created for Svenskt Tenn in the spring of 2019 is no exception.

“I think that my work is about creating a kind of mood, a kind of atmosphere – it really is a form of storytelling. Together with Svenskt Tenn, I decided to work on a range of printed cushions and trays, as well as a small range of hand-painted bags, lamp shades and cushions. The designs all feature my watercolour faces but I’ve woven in some of my other favourite elements too – columns, arrows, stars. I hope that the designs have a kind of romantic timelessness about them, as well as a charming playfulness” Luke explains.

The inspiration comes from all sorts of places and genres. From Luke’s favourite artists and designers from the past – Cecil Beaton, Oliver Messel, Jean Cocteau, David Hicks, the Bloomsbury Group, to contemporary books and novels. Places he has visited, music and history are also sources of inspiration. Luke freely combines several inspirational sources in his designs and describes that “A fabric might be inspired as much by Ancient Egypt as it is by 1980s pop music.” No matter what he does, and where his creating spirit come from, it is colour – in every form, that is the bearing detail in his work.

“The world can be quite grey and grim, so it makes sense to me to embrace bold colour. I have always loved surrounding myself with colour – living with it, wearing it, making things with it. I suppose it’s about optimism; I find colour to be very happy-making. Small things make a big difference. For example, our hallway at home is painted bright egg yolk yellow. When I come home from work at the end of a long day and open the front door, my spirits are instantly lifted.”

Luke knew from an early age that he wanted to work as an artist or some sort of designer. He moved to London aged 18 to begin a menswear fashion design degree at Central Saint Martins, and used his spare time to sell antiques online. He worked in interior design for a short while, and set up his studio in the autumn of 2015 after taking on several illustration jobs.

“I’ve always been interested in the many different types of art and design – painting, drawing, ceramics, clothes, interiors, furniture...” he explains.

Since the opening of his studio, Luke has worked on a variety of exciting projects including commissions, collaborations and exhibitions. Now, his design is being introduced to Sweden with his first interior collection for Svenskt Tenn.

“I’ve been a fan of Svenskt Tenn and Josef Frank for many years, so it’s absolutely wonderful to now be collaborating! Frank’s fabrics are so playful and vivid. I remember buying my first Svenskt Tenn cushion maybe seven or eight years ago. It was and still is one of my favourite things.”

The exhibition Luke Edward Hall x Svenskt Tenn runs until 12 August in Svenskt Tenn’s store at Strandvägen 5.
