The carafe is mouth-blown at Reijmyre Glassworks and can vary slightly in colour tone and expression.
For the first time, this design, which has previously been turned in wood, has been produced entirely in glass. The table sculpture by Frida Fjellman, to use as a vase or carafe, is designed to add something rather than blend into a table setting. The cork is shaped like rising smoke: a smoke signal and a nod to communication and conversation at the dinner table.
The design is an attempt to capture the glass in motion, to depict how it appears in its warm form. The result is a carafe that is a play on baroque and rococo. It visualises the possibility of drawing out, of compressing. Dare to exaggerate and go all out.
Frida Fjellman was born and raised in Mariestad, Sweden, and studied ceramics at Helliden Folk High School in Tidaholm and at Konstfack, University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. Her bold, colourful and sometimes radical expressions in glass, ceramics and other materials have triumphed in Sweden and internationally – not least in the US, where in recent years she has produced a number of prestigious public creations for clients such as Art Basel, Forbes and Four Seasons. Frida Fjellman’s work is represented at Sweden’s Nationalmuseum, Röhsska Museum and the Public Art Agency Sweden, as well as in private collections all over the world. Read more

Svenskt Tenn cares about the environment and sustainability, and the classic glass items in its range are no exception. Reijmyre Glassorks in Östergötland uses glass from completely lead-free crystal. The furnaces used in the production process are electric, environmentally friendly and energy efficient and do not emit nitrogen oxide or carbon dioxide. The glassworks only uses electricity from water and wind power, and all glass that is discarded is melted and used again. Waste such as corrugated board and other combustibles are sorted and sent for recycling.
Purchasing Swedish glass cuts down on transport distances, helping to avoid a heavy climate impact, and by producing timeless products of high quality and a long service life, we are taking efforts not waste the earth’s resources. Classic glass objects are rarely thrown away. Instead, they are preserved throughout the years and can be resold or passed down as gifts to the next generation.
One of the glassblowing methods used at Reijmyre involves the glass being formed through driving. This is the most artisanal way of producing mouthblown glass, and the one requiring the greatest professional skill by the glass makers.
A glassblowing pipe is used to blow up the glass. This is a tool that was invented some 2,000 years ago and which, even today, is one of the most important tools when it comes to glass production. Once the glass is blown up, it is driven out by hand – a movement which can be likened to turning pottery. After that, a punty rod (an iron rod similar to the glassblowing pipe without a hole) is fixed to the bottom of the glass, before it is cut off from the glassblowing pipe. The edge is then formed with the help of, for example, cutting shears and drive shears. Once the glass is formed, it is knocked off from the punty rod and placed in a cooling oven, where the temperature is gradually reduced from 500°C to room temperature, a process that takes approximately six hours.
Finally, it’s time for quality control before the end product is packaged and sent to Svensk Tenn. The punty rod always leaves a mark on the bottom of the glass, referred to as a punty mark, which can be regarded as a sign of quality. Examples of objects manufactured in this way include Svensk Tenn’s schnapps glasses and the Gala candle rings by Ulla Christiansson.
