The Patterned World of Josef Frank

Josef Frank’s organic-inspired patterns are unique in 20th century textile design. Drawing from nature, his large-scale designs invite us into colourful, strange and untamed landscapes.

About the prints

Josef Frank was steeped in the history and joy of fabric from an early age, his father was a textile merchant and his mother excelled at needlework from her own designs.

“The monochromatic surface appears uneasy, while prints are calming, and the observer is unwillingly influenced by an underlying slow approach.”

Textile qualities

Josef Frank’s timeless designs are printed on the finest quality linen. The three fabric types—100 Lin, 315 Lin, and 450 Lin—have each been developed to suit specific purposes, from curtains and soft furnishings to upholstered furniture.

Printing Josef Frank’s fabrics

Josef Frank’s patterns are meticulously produced through traditional screen printing – a time-intensive yet superior method of textile printing – carried out either at Tissus d’Avesnières in Laval, France, or at Standfast & Barracks in Lancaster, United Kingdom.

Josef Frank

Austrian designer and architect Josef Frank has had an enormous impact on the history of Swedish design. Despite being nearly 50 years old when emigrating to Sweden, he is now considered one of the country’s most important designers of all time.
