Ground Settings Intro - Svenskt Tenn

Svenskt Tenn exhibited ”Ground Settings” 11.10.17 – 22.10.17

Emma Stridh from Beckmans College of Design has received Svenskt Tenn’s annual design scholarship for her “Ground Settings” graduation project. The work represents the design of a meal with clay, wood, metal, linen and glass as the raw materials. The final result is now on display at Svenskt Tenn’s store on Strandvägen in Stockholm.

It is the fourth year that Svenskt Tenn has awarded a scholarship to a graduate student majoring in design at Beckmans College of Design. With this scholarship, the company wants to reward and support young talents who focus on craftsmanship and sustainability in their design work.

In the Ground Settings graduation project, Emma Stridh has approached the materials as if they were ingredients in a food dish and tried to emulate a chef’s kitchen work in the design.

During the process of creating a meal, the cook refines the raw ingredients by tending to them, cutting, preparing, seasoning and tasting, to eventually create a beautiful presentation. Emma Stridh has worked in a similar way to highlight each of the special qualities in the materials. While being made, the shape of the objects has changed and they have been polished and surface treated, in a continuous dialogue with craftspeople within each material’s field.

The result is several glasses, bowls and dishes, as well as a table and a stool that can be seen at Svenskt Tenn until October 22.
