These placemats are hand made by women in Swaziland. They are part of the Gone Rural project, which empowers women in Eswatini’s most remote areas. Through the project, the women not only get a source of income, but they also get to make their voices heard and be an important part of their communities. The Lutindzi grass that is used to braid the placemats is harvested directly from the eSwatini mountains.
