In Obs! Magazine in 1954, Josef Frank wrote:

“Anyone who considers a chair to be seating furniture only to sit on will always sit uncomfortably. You sit on a chair to do something else, to work or eat at a table, and you leave the chair as soon as you can. A chair is comfortable for its purpose if you do not get tired too fast, that is if the chair adapts to all the positions you want to sit in. Personally, I never sit on a chair, which is designed for one single position. I want the opportunity to sit in different ways at different occasions and at different times of the day.”

Armchair 789 was designed by Josef Frank for Svenskt Tenn in 1938. Its openwork back is created in accordance with the idea of not introducing delimiting obstacles and walls into the interior. The form is typical of the early Victorian era and is commonly referred to in England as "Captain's chair". However, the robustness of the traditional captain's chair is counteracted by the curved lines of the legs and back. The chair was re-launched at Svenskt Tenn in 2019 and it is handcrafted at Gemla, Sweden's oldest furniture factory.

In 1925, he founded the Haus & Garten interior firm together with architect colleague Oskar Wlach. Svenskt Tenn hired Josef Frank in 1934 and just a few years later he and Estrid Ericson made their international breakthrough. • Care instructions

Svenskt Tenn’s furniture is made from wood that is varnished or coated. Clean with a soft cloth dampened with mild dish detergent or soapy water. Dry with a soft cloth. Do not expose the furniture to prolonged humidity or direct heat or use polish, oil or abrasive cleaners on the furniture. In addition, avoid exposing the furniture to major changes in temperature and humidity. Contact a furniture restorer if the coating or wood gets damaged, as it can get worse if not tended to.

Keep in mind that furniture fabrics and leather exposed to direct sunlight will fade over time, and that the materials are affected by heat and moisture. Do not apply strong solvents, chemicals, stain removers or degreasers to leather surfaces. Specially adapted products are on the market for impregnation and conditioning.

  • Sustainability and manufacturing

    Material

    Mahogany

Wood is renewable, reusable and bio- degradable. Svenskt Tenn has worked with wood since the 1930s and the material is also one of the most dominant in the company’s production today. But for wood to be a really good material from an environmental point of view, it should come from responsibly managed forests. All of Svenskt Tenn’s furniture suppliers and their wood suppliers are subject to the EU’s Timber Regulation, which has strict rules for the wood trade. This is to deal with the global problem of illegal logging and to counter trafficking in illegal timber and wooden goods within the EU.

Alongside the EU Timber Regulation, there are a large number of voluntary certification schemes for forest management and forest products. One of the most well known is FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification. FSC is an international organisation that promotes environmentally responsible forest management, but unlike other certifications, it also takes social and economic aspects into consideration. Svenskt Tenn wants to support FSC, and in the company’s purchasing rules for wood, we urge our furniture makers and their wood suppliers to manufacture our products in FSC- certified wood if possible. We also make sure to keep up the dialogue with our suppliers on this issue.

Gemla furniture factory has chosen to be at the forefront in terms of natural and environmentally friendly materials, and the energy used in the factory derives exclusively from green, renewable sources.

This is how furniture is made at Gemla

Gemla is Sweden’s oldest furniture factory and a number of Josef Frank’s chairs are produced here, stool 1034 in mahogany as well as the mirror with mirror frame. A number of people are involved in the process whereby the furniture undergoes everything from planing, sawing and milling to polishing and trimming.

The manufacturing process begins with the carpenter carefully choosing timber of the correct dimension and quality. The rough, unplaned plank is subsequently dealt with by hand, with each detail being carefully formed before everything is brought together into a finished piece of furniture. In recent years, Gemla has also begun introducing modern CNC milling machine in some of the components, allowing a large number of processing elements to be carried out after each other.

After being put together, the furniture is polished. If it is to be dyed, it is then sprayed with several layers of lacquer, with an element of polishing in between. Any upholstering constitutes the final part of the manufacturing process, before the furniture is packaged and delivered to Svenskt Tenn.
