Legs in lathed walnut and table rim in moulded walnut. Tabletop of elm burl veneer.
The characteristic features of the elm burl veneer are lively with both calm and swirling parts. The elm root colour could differentiate from light golden, shimmering green to dark brown. Each table therefor gets its unique expression and individual character.
The table is handcrafted in Sweden.
All Svenskt Tenn furniture bears a plaque proving that the furniture is genuine.
Josef Frank was fond of the circle. It is seen in many of his designs, both the windows in his architectural works and in mirrors and tables. Coffee table 2139 combines the round shape with Josef Frank’s typical coamings. The three legs are tapering downwards, giving it an airy impression that is enhanced by the top "waist".
It was characteristic of Josef Frank to mix different materials and by making the tabletop in Elm burl and the rim and legs in walnut, he wanted to create a vivid look. Coffee table 2139 was designed for Svenskt Tenn in 1952.
Josef Frank grew up in Vienna and studied architecture at Konstgewerbeschule. In the 1920s he designed housing estates and large residential blocks built around common courtyards in a Vienna with severe housing shortages. In 1925 he started the Haus & Garten interior firm together with architect colleagues Oskar Wlach and Walther Sobotka. Svenskt Tenn hired Josef Frank in 1934 and just a few years later he and Estrid Ericson made their international breakthrough. Although he was already 50 when he left the burgeoning Nazism in Vienna for Sweden, Frank is considered one of Sweden’s most important designers. Read more
Svenskt Tenn’s furniture is made from wood that is varnished or coated. Clean with a soft cloth dampened with mild dish detergent or soapy water. Dry with a soft cloth. Do not expose the furniture to prolonged humidity or direct heat or use polish, oil or abrasive cleaners on the furniture.
At first, don’t place objects such as vases, books and coasters on the table since this can lead to changes in colour of the surface. After that, avoid allowing objects to remain too long in the same place on the table since this mightlead to darkening of the wood. In addition, avoid exposing the furniture to major changes in temperature and humidity.
Contact a furniture restorer if the coating or wood gets damaged, as it can get worse if not tended to.
Sustainability and manufacturing
Wood is renewable, reusable and bio- degradable. Svenskt Tenn has worked with wood since the 1930s and the material is also one of the most dominant in the company’s production today. But for wood to be a really good material from an environmental point of view, it should come from responsibly managed forests.
All of Svenskt Tenn’s furniture suppliers and their wood suppliers are subject to the EU’s Timber Regulation, which has strict rules for the wood trade. This is to deal with the global problem of illegal logging and to counter trafficking in illegal timber and wooden goods within the EU.
At the Eriksson & Sons carpentry outside Nyköping in Sweden, the tabletop for model “2139” and other types of Josef Frank furniture are made; a procedure that requires great artisanal skill at every stage. They use a root veneer, which, in itself, requires knowledge, since it is obtained by using a lathe to turn millimetre-thin sheets.
Taping and putting together veneer for one single table can take an entire working day. First you press the veneer sheets at a high temperature to flatten them out. Then begins the time-consuming job of putting together the veneer: five, six veneer sheets are placed on a plywood board, overlapping one another, and fastened with tiny nails.
It is then sawn in a zigzag manner, which produces a wave pattern in the veneer. This is done to mask the joints, because it is difficult for the eye to perceive a crooked line. Now you have two halves, which you fold, fronts facing each other. Then the backs are put together with adhesive paper strips. After that, the veneer is glued to a laminate board under high pressure and heat, so that the joints are evened out.
