Cloth placemats offer a way to create a personal table setting for both everyday meals and special occasions. Svenskt Tenn’s assortment includes linen placemats featuring Josef Frank’s classic, distinctive patterns, as well as plain-coloured designs and variations with decorative borders in contrasting colours. Placemats from Svenskt Tenn protect the surface of the table while adding colour, pattern and character to the table setting.
Body contentIn 1950, Josef Frank designed the Flora linen placemats for Svenskt Tenn. The six different floral motifs were created specifically for the placemats and depict columbine, harebell, oxeye daisy, wood cranesbill, meadow buttercup and heath spotted orchid. With their detailed illustrations, they evoke the abundance of flowers found in the Swedish summer landscape.
Flora placemats can be used as a matching set or combined in different motifs for a more varied table setting. The patterned placemats are equally suited to a simple breakfast or a carefully arranged dinner table.
Placemats offer a simple way to vary the expression of a table setting. Place them directly on the tabletop or over a tablecloth, and combine different colours and patterns to create a personal look. Pair them with napkins, tableware and other table accessories from Svenskt Tenn’s assortment to create a thoughtful and inviting table setting.
Svenskt Tenn’s founder, Estrid Ericson, had a particular fondness for the art of setting the table. In 1933, she created the exhibition Bord duka dig! (Table, Set Yourself!) at Strandvägen 5 in Stockholm. The exhibition received attention in the press, including the words: “Every table was a poem…”
In a radio talk in 1945, devoted entirely to the art of table setting, Estrid Ericson shared her thoughts and advice on the subject. She emphasised the importance of bringing beauty into everyday life and allowing beautiful things to take their place, without going to excess:
“We sit down to eat more than a thousand times each year of our lives, and our meals are so important to our happiness that we should make an effort to turn them into a pleasant occasion. Everything that can bring poetry and charm to the experience should be cherished.”
