  • Design

Josef Frank happily blended different types of materials to create exciting furniture. Table 965, in granite or travertine board, was designed by Josef Frank in 1938. The tapered legs are finished off with a stylized foot which is typical of his design, and it was inspired by historical English furniture tradition.

Josef Frank grew up in Vienna and studied architecture at Technische Hochschule (the Vienna University of Technology) in 1903 – 1908. In the 1920s he designed housing estates and large residential blocks built around common courtyards in a Vienna with severe housing shortages. In 1925, he founded the Haus & Garten interior firm together with architect colleague Oskar Wlach. Svenskt Tenn hired Josef Frank in 1934 and just a few years later he and Estrid Ericson made their international breakthrough. Although he was already 50 when he left the burgeoning Nazism in Vienna for Sweden, Frank is considered one of Sweden’s most important designers. Read more

  • Care instructions

Svenskt Tenn’s furniture is made from wood and then lacquered. The woodwork should be cleaned simply with a soft cloth dampened with mild dish detergent or soapy water. Make sure to dry it with a soft cloth.

Polish, oil or abrasive cleaners should never be used on the furniture. Never expose the furniture to prolonged humidity or direct heat . If an injury in the paint or wood occurs, you should immediately contact a furniture restorer . Often you can restore easier damage, but the damage is likely to worsen if not taken care of. Never move the furniture by dragging it across the floor.

The furniture lacquer can be damaged by direct heat and lengthy exposure to dampness.

  • Sustainability and manufacturing

    Material

    Mahogany & Granite

Wood is renewable, reusable and bio- degradable. Svenskt Tenn has worked with wood since the 1930s and the material is also one of the most dominant in the company’s production today. But for wood to be a really good material from an environmental point of view, it should come from responsibly managed forests.

All of Svenskt Tenn’s furniture suppliers and their wood suppliers are subject to the EU’s Timber Regulation, which has strict rules for the wood trade. This is to deal with the global problem of illegal logging and to counter trafficking in illegal timber and wooden goods within the EU.
