Svenskt Tenn’s assortment of exclusive furniture combines classic design with skilled craftsmanship and carefully selected materials. The assortment includes chairs, tables, cabinets, sofas, armchairs, stools and outdoor furniture for different rooms of the home. The majority of the assortment consists of furniture designed by architect and designer Josef Frank.
“Josef Frank’s furniture possesses originality, an unmistakable sense of culture and quality in its execution.”
– Estrid Ericson
Josef Frank left behind an extensive archive of furniture drawings, a selection of which are still produced by Svenskt Tenn today. The assortment also includes designer furniture by contemporary designers and craftspeople, bringing together different expressions and periods.
Josef Frank developed his own form of modernism, placing people at its centre and focusing on comfort, homeliness and a richness of colour. He advocated a freer, more artistic approach to design, drawing inspiration from different styles, periods and cultures.
Frank also spoke of the importance of the “clarity of a room”, believing that a room should be easy to perceive in order to feel comfortable. One way of achieving this was to design furniture with high legs, allowing the junction between floor and wall to remain visible and creating a sense of spaciousness. For the same reason, Josef Frank often designed chairs with open backs.
Svenskt Tenn has worked with wooden furniture since the 1930s. To this day, wood remains one of the most important materials in furniture production, where traditional craftsmanship and extensive knowledge of materials play a central role.
Several pieces are produced at the Eriksson & Söner cabinetmaking workshop outside Nyköping, Sweden, where each furniture component is worked by hand. Some of Josef Frank’s most well-known cabinets are made by cabinetmaker Anders Mattsson in Valdemarsvik.
Upholstered furniture, including sofas, armchairs and stools, is produced in part by the family-owned furniture manufacturer Sjögrens in Tranås. Here, production is characterised by skilled craftsmanship and few automated processes. Many upholstered pieces are made to order and can be upholstered in a wide selection of fabrics.
At Svenskt Tenn, Josef Frank’s classic furniture meets contemporary design in interiors where different styles, materials and expressions can be combined. This reflects Josef Frank’s philosophy of interior design, in which a personal home evolves over time, allowing old and new to exist side by side.
“It doesn’t matter if you mix old and new, or different furniture styles, colours and patterns. Things that you like will always blend naturally into a harmonious whole.”
– Josef Frank
