Fabric-clad cabinet in mahogany with the white Hawai fabric. Both cabinet and fabric print are designed by Josef Frank.
The cabinet has two lockable doors. Inside, the it has a middle divider, and each side has five shelves creating a total of ten sections.
The cabinet is handcrafted in Sweden. Each cabinet is unique and can vary from the picture though the pattern repeat will in the whole be the same. All Svenskt Tenn furniture bears a plaque proving that the furniture is genuine.
Josef Frank designed this fabric-clad cabinet in 1934-1935, after turning his gaze to Great Britain. Upholstering furniture with fabric was part of the British design culture, and Josef Frank was appealed by the contrast between the hard wood and the soft fabric. The cabinet is made of mahogany and covered with the Hawai fabric.
Josef Frank grew up in Vienna and studied architecture at Konstgewerbeschule. In the 1920s he designed housing estates and large residential blocks built around common courtyards in a Vienna with severe housing shortages. In 1925 he started the Haus & Garten interior firm together with architect colleagues Oskar Wlach and Walther Sobotka. Svenskt Tenn hired Josef Frank in 1934 and just a few years later he and Estrid Ericson made their international breakthrough. Although he was already 50 when he left the burgeoning Nazism in Vienna for Sweden, Frank is considered one of Sweden’s most important designers. Read more
Svenskt Tenn’s furniture is made from wood that is varnished or coated. Clean with a soft cloth dampened with mild dish detergent or soapy water. Dry with a soft cloth. Do not expose the furniture to prolonged humidity or direct heat or use polish, oil or abrasive cleaners on the furniture.
Avoid placing vases, books, placemats and the like, on the cabinet top when the furniture is new, as colour variations can occur on the surface. Also avoid exposing the furniture to large changes in temperature and humidity.
Contact a furniture restorer if the coating or wood gets damaged, as it can get worse if not tended to.
Wood is renewable, reusable and bio- degradable. Svenskt Tenn has worked with wood since the 1930s and the material is also one of the most dominant in the company’s production today. But for wood to be a really good material from an environmental point of view, it should come from responsibly managed forests.
All of Svenskt Tenn’s furniture suppliers and their wood suppliers are subject to the EU’s Timber Regulation, which has strict rules for the wood trade. This is to deal with the global problem of illegal logging and to counter trafficking in illegal timber and wooden goods within the EU.
